Learn the Words of the Quran

The Quran contains roughly 77,797 words in total, but only 4,832 unique words (lemmas). The rest are repetitions. This is the single most useful fact for anyone learning Quranic Arabic: you do not need to learn tens of thousands of words — you need to learn a few hundred of the right ones.

This dictionary ranks every Quranic word by frequency, so you always know which words give you the most understanding for the least effort. Every word includes its Arabic form, transliteration, trilateral root, part of speech, and meanings in English, Urdu and Pashto.

How Many Quran Words Do You Need to Know?

Frequency does the heavy lifting. A small number of words appear again and again:

This means a learner who masters just 500 Quranic words will recognise three out of every four words while reading. That is the difference between reading blindly and reading with understanding.

The Most Common Words in the Quran

These are the most frequently occurring words in the Quranic text:

WordTransliterationMeaningTimes
مِنminfrom, of, among3,226
اللَّهAllahAllah, God2,699
مَاmawhat, that which, not2,565
لَاlano, not1,738
فِىfiin, at, within1,701
إِنّinnaindeed, verily1,682
قَالَqalahe said1,618
رَبّrabbLord, Sustainer975

Notice how many of these are particles and prepositions rather than dramatic theological terms. This is typical of any language — the connective tissue appears most often, and learning it first is what makes a text suddenly readable.

Frequency Tiers Explained

Platinum — 18 words (500+ occurrences)

The absolute core. If you learn nothing else, learn these. They appear on nearly every page.

Gold — 87 words (100–499 occurrences)

High-value vocabulary that carries most of the Quran's recurring themes and grammar.

Silver — 122 words (50–99 occurrences)

Common enough that you will meet them regularly across many surahs.

Bronze — 628 words (10–49 occurrences)

Solid working vocabulary. Together with the tiers above, this is comprehensive coverage.

Common — 3,977 words (1–9 occurrences)

The long tail, including many words unique to a single verse or surah. Learn these as you encounter them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many unique words are in the Quran?

There are 4,832 unique lemmas in the Quran out of approximately 77,797 total words. A lemma is a dictionary root form — all the grammatical variations of a word count as one lemma.

What is the most repeated word in the Quran?

The preposition مِن (min), meaning "from" or "of", appears 3,226 times — more than any other word. The name اللَّه (Allah) is second, appearing 2,699 times.

Can I learn Quranic Arabic just from word lists?

Vocabulary is necessary but not sufficient. Word frequency gets you recognition; grammar (nahw and sarf) turns recognition into comprehension. Use this dictionary alongside a grammar resource, not instead of one.
